About Singleton

Singleton, with a population of 21,000 is in the Hunter Valley, 1½ hours west of Newcastle and 2½ hours north-west of Sydney. The town is experiencing strong growth in population and industry.

The first European discovery of Singleton was in 1820 by John Howe – making it one of Australia’s oldest towns. The town was named after Benjamin Singleton, one of the first settlers in the region.

The first one hundred years of Singleton’s settled history is dominated by agriculture. However, the discovery of vast resources of coal in the area has transformed Singleton into the state’s largest producer of coal, giving the shire a twofold industry profile.

The diversity of its resources has encouraged change, helping Singleton evolve from a quiet country town to one of the most progressive and sophisticated commercial centres in the state, catering for its cosmopolitan workforce and residents with a rapidly growing tourism industry to welcome visitors.
