Christmas Lights Competition

Christmas is only around the corner and the D & J Pearce Real Estate’s Christmas Lights Competition is on again this year.

Entering its 16th year, the competition shows that Christmas isn’t just for children, it is for everyone.

Every year thousands of cars drive around to view the displays at night.

The idea came about from Denis and Julie Pearce when they felt that less homes seemed to be decorated and they feared the spirit of Christmas was being lost in Singleton.

The competition has changed that and now many homes take part, making Singleton a very pretty place to drive around at night during the festive season.

Simple ideas like tinsel in the trees or on your fence or putting your Christmas tree in your front window are all ways of sharing the spirit of Christmas with the community.

Some people play Christmas carols for the public to hear and children dress up as shepherds and wave to the cars or even sing carols which really makes it very special.

The competition is open to all home owners in the town area, Singleton Heights, Darlington Estate, Hunterview, Glengowrie Estate and The Retreat. Unfortunately country areas are excluded.

There is no entry fee but each home should register with D & J Pearce Real Estate at 153 John Street and a special Christmas Lights sign must be erected in the yard or on the fence of the nominated home.

A $5 deposit is required for each sign and is refunded on its return.

The sign is used for two reasons. One is to allow people driving around in the night to find your home rather than having to look for house numbers and the other reason is that only homes with signs are eligible to win the cash prizes offered in the competition.

First place will receive $200 and there will be ten runners up each to receive $50 each.

A list of registered homes will be published in the Singleton Argus each week.

For 2008, homes must be registered by December 15 and judging will take place on December 15, 16 and 17 and the winners announced on Thursday December 18.

Our Christmas competition was started to capture that magical atmosphere we knew of as kids.

If we as a community can join in together to light up our town, everyone enjoys it from young to old, from family to strangers, with children or without.

We encourage you to try it this year, decorate your home, drive around and join in the fin of this wonderful time of the year and make this a very Merry Christmas.
